An Explanation of Teamleague SectionsT49Index ->

When TL abandoned the pre-determined sections at the beginning of 2010, I posted an explanation of what the new section-structure would be like on the old board. As that post is no longer available, and since we always have new players coming into the league, I have decided to post this updated explanation.

Sections for T49, and subsequent tournaments, will be setup once all team entries have been processed. Teams will be ranked according to average rating, and then divided into sections of 7 or 8 teams, depending on how nearly the total number of teams is divisible by 8. Sections will then be capped according to the rating of the lowest ranked team from the section immediately above; consequently, the top section has no rating cap. Once these caps have been set, teams may add players to teams so long as the team average remains below this cap, subject to normal rules governing adding or removing players.
Each section will then play a single round-robin tourney lasting 7 rounds, followed by a final match played between the 1st- and 2nd-placed teams to decide an overall winner, with the 1st placed team being declared the winner in the event of a 2-2 tie in the final.
The criteria to decide which sections (if any) will have 7 teams rather than 8, is principally that of even competition. Therefore those sections which have the largest rating spread will be smaller - typically the top section will have only 7 teams for this reason. The league administration also reserves the right to tweak the numbers in order to avoid player clashes, when this is the most reasonable solution.
When player clashes do occur (i.e. by a player finding themself on two teams drawn into the same section), that player will be obliged to leave one of those teams. In some cases, we have permitted a whole team to agree to move up a section in order to avoid such clashes, but only when the team captain has agreed to this. Typically, sections are about 100 points apart, so joining teams separated by 100 points is usually good insurance against a clash. The only absolute limit on the number of teams a player can join is the total number of sections.

I believe that covers the most relevant areas, and is up-to-date with current league policy. Further comments or questions are welcome, but please try not to de-rail this thread with unnecessary/unrelated comments.
